Welcome to Sakai City Cultural Foundation WebPages!

Sakai City Cultural Foundation

In ancient times, Sakai City prospered as the center of Tumulus culture, represented by the Nintoku-ryo Tumulus which dominates the city's landscape. During the Medieval period, Sakai flourished as a liberal, self-governing city surrounded by moats, and served as the origin of Japan's tea culture.
With this rich cultural heritage and tradition, the Sakai City Cultural Foundation is implementing various cultural programs to actively promote cultural initiatives, carried out at the hands of it's citizens. Our two main objectives are the promotion and activation of civic and urban cultures, that are both attractive and unique; and to develop Sakai as a city that appeals to the rest of the world through it's policy of cultural invigoration.

YOSANO AKIKO (1878―1942)

YOSANO AKIKO

Born into the famous Surugaya Confectionery family in Kaino-cho, Sakai, in 1878 she was a composer of tanka (thirty-one-syllable verse) through the three eras of Meiji, Taisho and Showa.

Dubbed the "Poetess of Passion", she was one of the leading figures in the history of modern literature, the wife of Yosano Tekkan, who was also a writer, and the mother of 11 children.

Her "Midare-gami", published in 1901, which sung the praises of her boundless love for her husband and the fresh feelings of youth, was highly popular among the younger generation and is considered a masterpiece of Romanticism.

A devoted student of ancient literature, she dedicated herself throughout her life to translating such classics as the Genji Monogatari (Tale of Genji) into modern Japanese. She also wrote countless essays on the rights of women and played an active role in advancing women's education. The accomplishments of Yosano Akiko, a pioneer in the struggle for the liberation of women and a fearless activist in a wide variety of fields, seem endless.

ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860―1939)

YOSANO AKIKO

Alphonse Mucha, one of the best-known Art Nouveau illustrators and painters, was born in lvancice (now the Czech Republic) in 1860. After studying art in Munich, he moved to Paris where he produced the Gismonda poster featuring the great actress Sarah Bernhardt, establishing his fame throughout Paris.

His works are characterized by a decorative style of gently flowing curves and beautiful colors. He often employed Byzantine or Celtic decorative patterns and the decorative modes of his native country, and because his works reflect the influence of ukiyoe, they are easily appreciated by the Japanese.

The world of Yosano Akiko's poems is strongly characterized by Art Nouveau elements and Mucha's works were often featured on the cover of Myojo, the journal that was the platform for Yosano Akiko and Tekkan.

Mucha was also a talented designer and produced many outstanding works in the field of graphic design and all genre of design as well. His Documents Decoratifs and Figures Decoratives are highly evaluated even today as design textbooks.
